A whisper, a breath, and Ana found herself transported back in time. The room around her dissolved into the familiar warmth of her childhood home, her parents' voices washing over her like a soothing balm.
"Ana, remember to practice your Magic," her mother said gently, tucking a loose strand of auburn hair behind Ana's ear. "It's important to master the arcane arts."
Ana's eyes, bright orbs of warm yellow hues that mirrored the setting sun, flickered with mirth and anticipation. "Alright, mother," she replies, her voice a soft tinkling chime carried on a playful breeze. She raises her tiny hands, palms facing outwards, her small fingers curled in concentration.
A smoky tendril of ether magic laces through Ana's fingers, like delicate threads of silk being woven by her it hummed softly, like a lullaby sung in a foreign language. Like a melodic tune. Her mother watched patiently, a soft smile dancing on her lips, her own magical aura humming in harmony with her daughter's.
Her mother responded with a nod and an encouraging smile that held the warmth of a thousand suns in its curve. "You're learning fast, my dear Ana," she said, her voice rippling through the room like a soft melody. Her golden eyes held a tender pride that spoke volumes more than her words ever could.
Their playful exercise was interrupted by a sudden gust of wind that swung the front door open, revealing her father’s imposing form cast in the evening light.
He entered their humble abode, his stern gaze immediately softening at the sight of his wife and daughter bathed in an ethereal glow, their harmonious magic acting as a beacon to his tolerant but distant heart.
Seeing her father, Ana's face lit up like a bright star in a moonless night sky. Excitement sparkled like diamonds in her yellow eyes as she rushed towards him, her little feet drumming on the wooden floor. "Father!" She cried out joyously, a word that held all the love and adoration of a naive child.
Ana squealed once she was atop his broad shoulders, her eyes sparkling with delight as they locked onto her father's hardened visage. "Someday, I'll be strong like you.”
Her father scoffed playfully at her declaration, ruffling her auburn hair affectionately with a chuckle. "Oh? And who says you aren't already?" He looked upon the magic-twined figures of mother and daughter, his dark eyes softening in a rare moment of overt emotion.
»Ana blinked, feeling the weight of their love and the bittersweet pang of nostalgia as the memory unfolded before her. Yet, even as she longed to cling to this moment of happiness, a chill crept through the air, foreshadowing the horror that was about to be unleashed.«
As the warm hues of the setting sun began to fade outside, her father shared a look with her mother. There was an air of concern on his face that seemed oddly misplaced among their family's usual harmony. The usual warmth in his eyes was replaced by a flicker of uncertainty, and for a brief moment, Ana felt an icy chill trace down her spine.
His gaze settled back onto Ana, but she noticed the tenseness around his eyes, the slight frown tugging at the corners of his mouth. He gently set Ana on her feet, his hands resting on her shoulders. "Ana," he murmured softly, "I need you to promise me something."
Ana's bright yellow eyes widened with curiosity as she looked up at him. "Yes, Father?"
"Always remember your strength comes from more than just your magic," he said solemnly, his gaze penetrating deep into hers, "True power comes from within...from here." He lightly tapped at her chest, over her heart. His words reverberated through the room, hanging heavy in the air even after he had finished speaking.
Ana nodded solemnly, her eyes glazing over with determination and a hint of confusion. She didn't quite understand what he meant yet, but she knew his words held a weight that was beyond her young years.
"Yes, Father," she answered, her voice strong as she looked him straight in the eye.
Just then, the comfortable quiet of their home was shattered by an earsplitting crash. The door to their cottage blew inwards, splintering into a hundred pieces.
Her father swiftly pulled her behind him, shielding her with his body as he drew his sword from its sheath. His eyes were alert and hardened by an unforeseen threat that had violently intruded on their peaceful evening.
"Son of Anakir," came a cold voice from the doorway, all too familiar to Ana's parents but unknown to her.
A figure slowly came into view. Tall and gaunt, he stood framed in the doorway, the dying light of the sun casting long, creeping shadows around him. His ashen skin seemed almost spectral in the dimming light, his glowing red eyes piercing through the gloom. A black cloak billowed around him like a shroud of darkness, adding to his ominous presence.
Ana watched, her heart pounding with fear as she hid behind her father's sturdy form. There was something terrifying about this stranger. Something cold and cruel that made her instincts scream in terror.
His voice was like a chilling wind cutting through the silence, devoid of empathy or warmth. "Why resist, old friend?" The words slithered out from beneath the stranger's hidden face. "You know what I've come for."
Ana's father remained unmoving, his grip on his sword tightening until his knuckles turned white. He stood steadfast between his terrified family and the ominous figure at their threshold.
"You're not taking my family," he growled out fiercely, his voice echoing throughout their home.
A bitter laugh echoed through the shattered entrance. "I don't want your pitiful bloodline,” he sneered back contemptuously. "I want your power."
The figure stepped over the remnants of the shattered door, his black cloak billowing around him, stirring up a chilling wind that snuffed out the cozy warmth of their home. He was a specter of dread – a specter whose very presence polluted their sanctuary. His voice was a chilling lullaby that danced on the edges of nightmares. "Kneel," he commanded, his glowing eyes never leaving Ana's father.
Her father held his ground, his grip tightening around his weapon, defiance etching lines into his weathered face. "You will not take another step," he growled back in response.
The intruder simply tilted his head to one side, as if amused by the futile challenge. Inky tendrils of shadow began to coil around him
"Sweetheart, go to your room," her father commanded, urgency creeping into his voice. He glanced nervously at the door, his once-confident demeanor crumbling as he sensed the looming danger.
"Stay quiet, Ana," her mother added, her eyes filled with fear. "We'll handle this.", her mother added, "We love you."
"Silence!" the figure snarled, his voice cold and ruthless. With a flick of his wrist, a surge of mana erupted from his fingertips, slamming into Ana's father with devastating force.
Ana watched in horror as her father was thrown backward into the room, crashing into a shelf lined with their precious family relics.
"Father!" Ana cried out in fear and started to rush towards him. But before she could reach him, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, holding her back. She looked up to see her mother's frightened eyes staring down at her.
Before the figure could advance further, a sudden surge of electric energy filled the room, crackling with dynamic force. Ana's mother stepped forward, her eyes ignited with a fierce determination and a power that shimmered around her like an ethereal aura.
"Stay away from my family," she commanded, her usually soft voice hard and commanding. Her hands were held aloft, glowing brightly as intense arcs of electricity snaked around her outstretched fingers.
With a swift upwards motion, she sent a violent storm of lightning surging towards the intruder. The room lit up brightly for a moment, casting eerie shadows against the walls as the electrical current found its mark. The figure recoiled in surprise and pain, momentarily stunned by the attack.
It was but a moment, the figure quickly regaining his infernal composure. The air around him danced with a blinding darkness, swallowing the lightning and leaving a chilling echo behind. "Impressive," he drawled, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "But you'll have to do better than that."
"Let's see how you handle this!" Lyra's voice cracked like thunder as she called upon her power once more. This time, instead of lightning, an orb of swirling white-hot flame appeared in her hand. With a fierce battle cry, she hurled it at the intruder.
Ana could only watch in awe as her mother wielded the storm.
Electricity continued to crackle menacingly around her hands, casting a surreal glow on her determined face. But before she could summon another bolt, the figure retaliated. A sudden swell of darkness erupted from him, extinguishing the light and swallowing the room in inky blackness.
A gasp escaped Ana as the world disappeared around her. She felt her heartbeat echo loudly in the pressing silence, pounding in rhythm with her growing fear. And then, just as abruptly, the darkness lifted.
Like a streak of white lightning, he suddenly appeared between the figure and Ana's mother, blocking their deadly dance of power. His lance, gleamed brightly under the moonlight that filtered through their shattered entrance way. The shaft of the lance was as white as a moonbeam and as formidable as a lightning bolt. It thrummed with a vibrant hum that echoed the ancient song of dragons - a symphony of raw power, condensed wisdom and untamed courage. The handle wrapped around Aric's grip fit perfectly in his hand as if it were an extension of him, merging with his very being.
The head of the lance bore the distinctive shape of a dragon's head. Its eyes seemed to flare with life, glowing with an inner fire that mirrored Aric's own fierce spirit. The gaping maw opened wide, showing rows of gleaming teeth fashioned from translucent magic and shimmering with raw spirit energy.
The intruder reacted instantly, twirling around to face Aric while raising a shimmering field of pure mana around him to deflect Lyra's voltaic assault. His dark cloak whirled around him like liquid night as he evaded Aric’s strikes with agility that belied his ominous form.
Aric, ever the formidable warrior, matched his opponent's agility with a deadly grace of his own. His lance slashed through the air, leaving behind trails of cold, glinting light. With every vicious swing and maneuver, his body morphed and twisted in response.
Suddenly, the figure broke away from Aric's onslaught and turned his attention back to Lyra. The dark mask that concealed his face twisted into a menacing smile as he raised one gloved hand towards her.
"No!" Aric roared in defiance and lunged at him again. A surge of mana swelled around his form as he called upon his inner reserves for an ultimate strike.
But it was too late.
A cruel laughter echoed across the room as the dark figure released a concentrated bolt of pure mana straight at Lyra. Her eyes widened in shock as her defensive shield shattered instantly under its assault.
She crumpled to the floor like a discarded puppet.
Ana's heart skipped a beat at the sight and a raw scream clawed its way up her throat, only to die as a whimper on her lips. Lyra's usually vibrant eyes were glazed over with pain, yet they remained fixed on Aric, reflecting a heartbreaking desperation.
In the heart-wrenching chaos that ensued, the once grand hall of their home seemed to shrink, consumed by the dark figure's looming presence. The vibrant tapestries, each one depicting their ancestors' heroic deeds, hung unnoticed. The gilded chandeliers swung inconsistently, their flickering light souring against this night of irreversible horror.
Aric's eyes held Lyra's for a moment before his gaze hardened into something fierce and unyielding. "Lyra," he growled, each syllable wrought with determination and urgency. He raised his lance high in the air, the moonlight glancing off the brilliant dragon's head, casting eerie shadows onto his determined face.
Unleashing a roar that matched the fierce storm raging outside His body convulsed with waves of raw energy as scales erupted onto his skin, glinting silver-white in the half-light. His emerald eyes blazed with an inner fire that echoed the power of ancient dragons.
"Dragon's Charge!" he bellowed.
The world seemed to hold its breath as Aric lunged at Valar like a force of nature unleashed, his lance leading the way with a violent surge of energy resonating from it. The air around him crackled and screamed in protest, but nothing could halt his charge. It was a moment of pure, unrestrained power—a reflection of a warrior’s desperate determination fueled by love and despair.
In response, his body began to ripple, the scales under his skin shining silver-white as they emerged and multiplied. They wrapped around him like an impenetrable armor shimmering under the moonlight piercing through shattered windows.
His lance glowed white hot in his hand as mana surged through it. The dragon-shaped head of the weapon roared to life, cold flame flaring from its gaping jaws and pooling around Aric’s form, casting a spectral glow upon the scene of impending doom. The air crackled around them, filling with an electric tension as he channeled all his strength into his signature move.
Like a meteor, Aric shot towards Valar, leaving streaks of cold fire in his wake.
But Valar stepped aside at the last possible moment with an agility that seemed almost unnatural. The sinister figure turned on Aric with an expression of cruel amusement etched onto his shadowy features.
"Too slow," Valar hissed, a malicious grin spreading across his ashen face as he sidestepped Aric's charge. His red eyes gleamed with cruel mirth, a chilling contrast to the desperate determination reflected in Aric's emerald orbs.
Aric's momentum propelled him past Valar. He skidded to a halt, his boots scraping against the stone floor, sparks flying from the force. His breaths came out ragged and harsh, the sound echoed hauntingly through the grand hall.
Ana watched helplessly as Valar raised his hand, palm outstretched towards Aric. Dark mana swirled around him like an ominous storm cloud. The room seemed to darken further, shadows twisting and writhing as if possessed by some unspeakable entity.
"Time for your end," Valar whispered and a blinding burst of dark energy erupted from his palm.
Ana's heart froze as she watched Aric turn just in time to see the attack. His wide eyes locked with hers for an infinitesimally small moment, time itself seeming to slow in the face of impending doom. She saw a world of emotions swirl within his gaze - fear, regret, sorrow but above them all, love that burned brighter than any flame.
The darkness met him with a force so dreadful that it threatened to shatter his very soul. Aric's body convulsed under the impact, his scream lost in the cacophony of destruction. The lance slipped from his grasp, clattering onto the ground, its once vibrant energy now flickering weakly.
The dark knight lowered his hand, smirking as he watched Aric stagger and fall onto his knees. His entire body thrummed with mana that was quickly fading away as the scales on his skin retreated back into him, leaving behind a raw vulnerability that hadn't been there before.
Ana watched, her heart a leaden weight in her chest as Aric reached out for Lyra, but she wasn't there; Valar had seen to that. His emerald eyes dimmed with a profound sorrow, a single tear tracing the curve of his cheek.
His eyes sought Ana's once more. There was no fear in them now, only love and a sense of peace that came from knowing he had done everything within his power to protect those he cared about.
"Forgive me," he mouthed at her, his voice lost amidst the chaos.
Ana's heart gave a brutal squeeze as she watched his lips form those words. Her vision blurred with a hot rush of tears, her mouth opening in a soundless cry. She could feel the remnants of their bond tugging at her soul, as if her father was reaching out for her across an unfathomable distance.
A gut-wrenching howl filled the hall as Valar raised his hand once more. His laughter was a chilling melody that bounced off the towering pillars, echoing in their grandeur. He stood over Aric, reveling in the mortal's torment, his red eyes flaring with sadistic delight. Valar's sneer deepened as he hissed, "Your love has made you weak, just as I predicted."
The world was reduced to the heartbreaking tableau of Aric's prostrate form and Valar's towering figure wreathed in shadow.
Ana stumbled forward; her legs were weak and shaky.
Her boots echoed in the hall as she stepped forward, navigating through the debris and destruction that littered the floor. Each step felt like a lifetime, an eternity that stretched out before her. Her mind was a whirl of thoughts and emotions, but there was one constant: Aric. Her father. Her world.
She could feel Valar's eyes on her, his gaze cold and unfeeling, void of any compassion or remorse. He made no attempt to stop her - why would he? In his eyes, she was nothing more than a broken pawn on a chessboard.
Her hand trembled as she reached out, brushing against the cool scales still left on Aric's skin. His eyes fluttered open at her touch, a ghost of his former self looking back at her.
"Dad," she whispered, choking on her words as tears streamed down her face. His name tasted bitter on her tongue, heavy.
"Mom.. Dad.." Ana sobbed, her heart shattering as she witnessed the brutal end of her parents' lives. The intruder's eyes, cold and merciless, locked onto her own, and she knew with chilling certainty that she would be next.
She desperately gasped for air, her voice strangled by fear as she attempted to call out for help. But her cries were muffled and drowned out by the pounding of her heart, leaving her silent pleas unheard in the darkness.
But the stranger only advanced, his footsteps slow and deliberate as he closed the distance between them. And as he loomed over her, Ana could see the gruesome details of his mask – a twisted visage marked by crimson streaks, an eerie reflection of the bloodshed he had unleashed upon her family.
"Remember this face," he hissed, his breath hot against her skin as he tightened his grip around her throat. "For this is the face of your doom."
And as darkness crept into the edges of Ana's vision, she knew that she would never forget.
"Fight back!" she screamed internally, trying to will herself into action. But her body refused to respond, betraying her at the worst possible moment. She couldn't tear her gaze away from the scene before her – her mother's lifeless form crumpled on the ground, her father's once-strong figure now limp and broken.
"Pathetic," the assailant sneered as he stalked closer. "You're just as weak as they were."
"Stop it!" Ana choked out, her throat constricting with despair and anger. Yet even as the words left her lips, she knew they held no power – the only force that could have saved her parents lay hidden within her, buried beneath the suffocating weight of her own fear.
"Such a waste," the killer tutted, shaking his head as he surveyed the carnage he had wrought. "All this potential, snuffed out in an instant. Maybe you'll learn from their mistakes," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "But I doubt it."
With a chilling glint in his eye, he sneered as he delivered the fatal blows. "If only you had been stronger," he spat, "you could have saved them."
In that moment, the room echoed with the sickening sounds of death, Ana felt something inside her snap. The crushing weight of her fear was replaced by a cold, empty void – a darkness that threatened to swallow her whole.
Her eyes snapped open at the sound of his taunting laughter, echoing amongst the walls. She grimaced in pain as she stared at her parents' lifeless bodies, feeling as though she had failed to protect them. "I'm sorry," she whispered in her mind, her voice trembling with anger and regret. "I did everything I could, but it wasn't enough - I was not strong enough."
"Look at you," Valar sneered, his voice twisted by the darkness that consumed him. His gaunt figure seemed almost ethereal as he slithered towards Ana. "Such a pitiful child."
"Get away from me!" she spat, her words dripping with venom. Yet even as she tried to mask her fear with anger, she knew that she stood no chance against this monster.
Valar's cold fingers still wrapped around her neck, his grip like iron. Her breath caught in her throat, the oppressive weight of his presence suffocating her. She could see his face clearly now – the dark mask hiding everything but those cruel, blood-red eyes that burned into her very soul.
"Remember this night," he breathed, his foul breath hot on her face. "Remember the pain. Remember your failure."
Ana's thoughts whirled chaotically, as if she were trapped in a storm of her own making. What had she done to deserve this? Why had fate chosen her family to suffer such a gruesome end?
"Go to hell!" Ana snarled, her yellow eyes blazing with defiance. But her voice quivered, betrayed by the terror that lay just beneath the surface.
"Perhaps I shall," Valar mused, his grip tightening around her slender throat. "But first, let us finish what we started."
"Please," she choked out, desperation clawing at her insides. "Please don't kill me."
"Kill you?" Valar laughed, a sound devoid of humor. "Oh, no, little elf. I have far greater plans for you."
As the world began to spin and darken, Ana's thoughts turned inward. "I will survive this," she vowed silently, her mind a whirlwind of determination and rage. "And when I do, I will make you pay."
"Remember my face, child," Valar whispered, his breath hot and fetid against her skin. "For it is the last thing you will see before your world crumbles to dust."
And as the darkness finally claimed her, Ana clung to that promise, the burning image of Valar seared into her memory like a brand – a terrible reminder of the evil that lurked in the shadows, waiting for its chance to strike once more.
The air in the room grew colder as Ana's vision blurred, her lungs burning for breath. She could feel Valar's vice-like grip on her throat, mercilessly crushing her windpipe. In that moment, she was nothing more than a trapped animal, clawing desperately at her captor's hand as her life force dwindled.
Valar's masked face loomed closer to her, and Ana could hear his heavy breathing behind the cold metal. He said nothing, but the intensity of his gaze told her everything she needed to know – he was relishing in her suffering.
"Fuck... you," she spat, each word a struggle to form. She realized there was no hope left. This was the end.
Ana surrendered to the void, her body going limp in Valar's relentless grip.
