Raizen Kuroda was the previous Shogun and Avatar of Summoning Magic, celebrated as a legendary figure across Kirijima. Over 2000 years ago, he fought alongside the elves in the Great War against the demons during the Kegare Jidai (Age of Uncleanliness), as it is known in Kirijima. Known for his incredible strength and feared by the demons, Raizen was also the original wielder of the legendary sword Shūzetsu. While few details of his life remain today, his legacy as the island's defender against the demonic threat is universally recognized. Only two people Thranduil Leafsong and the current Shogun were alive to witness his deeds and remain to tell of them.
Though specifics of Raizen’s personality are scarce, he is remembered as a charismatic leader and an intimidating force on the battlefield. His former student, Emiko Amatsukami, now the Shogun, and his elven ally Thranduil rarely speak of him. When they do, however, it is with reverence, conveying their deep respect and admiration for him.
Raizen is described as a tall, muscular figure with a powerful build. Numerous scars adorned his body, evidence of his countless battles and the fierce combat he endured.
While little is known about Raizen's exact combat techniques, it is speculated that he, like his student Emiko, specialized in weapon summoning. This likely made him a versatile and adaptive fighter, able to summon weapons suited to the demands of battle.
Legends and myths surround Raizen’s abilities, as no firsthand records have survived. The only remaining artifact that hints at his strength is the legendary sword Shūrai, now wielded by the current Shogun. This sword’s immense power over spatial magic offers a glimpse into Raizen’s formidable might.
Toward the end of the Great Demon War, Raizen sacrificed himself to cast an ultimate spell, summoning four beings from another plane and binding them to this realm. Severely wounded from battle and doubting his own ability to continue defending Kirijima, he made this ultimate sacrifice to ensure its protection. These four beings are now known as the Shitenno (Four Heavenly Guardians): Byakko, Suzaku, Seiryu, and Genbu, deified in Kirijima to this day.
The Mana from Raizen’s spell and the energy from his remains nourished the growth of the sacred Tengoku Tree, which continues to thrive under the protection of the Yugon Order and Raizen’s old friend, Thranduil Leafsong.
